Poppy + Sage | Handmade Celebration / Advent Spiral | NZ Macrocarpa
The spiral shape traditionally symbolises the natural turning in as the colder weather and darker days come. In Aotearoa, Winter Solstice is often celebrated as part of Matariki, the Māori New Year, as both events reflect a time of growth and renewal in the natural and spiritual worlds. The candles can be lit from the outside in leading up to Matariki, or the Winter Solstice, the peak of the darkest longest night and the beginning of the lighter days. Another way to use this spiral in the summer in the southern hemisphere is to add a candle or light a candle each day- starting from the inside of the koru to the outside to symbolise the growing light as the spiral unwinds and we come from the darker shorter days to the longer more open ones. We end up at the Summer Solstice on the 22nd December and then Christmas of course. It makes a great advent calender helping children to visualise the days passing and arriving with rhythm and anticipation. Each spiral is cut, drilled, sanded and oiled at home with love made one-by-one just for you. 5 Pieces Sustainably Sourced Untreated NZ Macrocapra + Natural Danish Oil All of our celebration ring candles, ornaments, numbers, letters, brass inserts and vase will fit into this spiral.
